Jumps, ramps, launches and drop offs
here I would like to know everything there is about jumps, etc. how to jump, how to build, where, what, height, distance, etc.

I'll start 1st. I'm very good at jumping on pavement ramps but when it comes to actual jumps and drop offs, i chicken out, or, I end up sideways in the air with no way of controlling my landing. what am i doing wrong? (besides not going to places that have them already made) I've have some bad spills and I'm getting bored of bailing, i want to land them now. On your normal pavement ramp, i can get good air, but i use my strength and momentum to achieve the height, yet flake on actual jumps.
drop offs are similar issues. high pavement drops are no prob, but as soon as i get into the veld or track, everything goes wrong. nine out of 10 times, my front wont lift, and its OTB for me. I think im in need of some lessons here.

I'm not far behind, I'm happy with drops of round a meter and doubles that ate about two bike lengths, but beyond that i'm out of my depth - as illustrated with my road gap crash in Paarl. Table tops i like ( never relay being that high off the ground, but i cant seem to muster the speed to clear all tabletops.
What i relay want is a jump into a dam or river where i can get the feel of the bike in the air and not need to worry about landing. I reckon after a few days just flying my instincts and reflexes should be able to keep up on jumps.
Everyone says to start slow and progress, but i dont have the time or energy to build my own jumps

Candyman, you need to come for a ride with me on the spruit hidden trails.
We have quite a few offshoot trails and jump sets that are great for learning on and getting some confidence.
One set involves a fast descent with a series of far (but low) launching ski jumps with no specific landing (which means you always make it, hahaha).
Another is a set of high flying dirt jumps (all gaps)... pretty big air can be obtained on these... enough for the guys to do can-cans and a superman or 2.
The last and current favourite of ours involves a 9 jump line, with 8 of them being gap jumps. Some shoot high, some shoot far... others shoot at an angle and land you on berms. Brilliant flow though, and soo much fun!
As for the building... I've helped out once or twice... most of the time height and distance can be fairly well guessed, but the fine tuning of the jump only happens after it's been tested.

here's a pic of one of our jumps:

mmm practice on dirt jumps is also something I desperately need, but i've telling myself and looking to buy a bmx for the purpose, like phenning says about landing in a lake or a pool of sorts, i wanted a smaller bike that i can 'throw away' from me in the air if feel like i've lost it. i figure it would be less painful and damaging than getting tangled up with a 7" 15kg all mountain machine
I do 95% of my jumping with my 7" 17kg machine and I love it. Nothing like 7" of forgiveness when you case a landing :)
lmao, ouens, i wish I had thought of that earlier with the water landing, then i wouldn't of spend almost 6months out of action, with a slight fear of landing. flat landings are cool, like the one big one b4 the bumps at HK, but these other ones, tjo, not so sure at the mo.
but yeah, the spruit sounds like loads of fun. just getting there is prob for me. no transport but my bike.....

yeah that jump does look cool but i agree with phenning, need something a little smaller to start off with, but once i got the feel for it, me and that particular jump are gonna have words of hangtime.
i see the jumps at the park are quite big, and they look sooo tempting, but let me start at the spruit 1st.
now another question, building the jumps. I'm really keen on building jumps on my DH track, but my knowledge is not so good, esp also, the last one i build, was the same one that put me outa action, lol, ironic hey. ive got 3 sections where a jump would be great. the one over the rock will prob be the easiest to build as the back bone is already there, (the rock, lol) but its the other 2 that have got me stumped. the 1st one at the beginning, the idea is to go over the bushes and corner. im looking at a 1.5m jump, (lol, says he who wants to start small, lol), and the other one would be on an open fast run, but for this i was thinking of a flat landing.
i think the biggest prob is that, im doing this on my ace, no one else there, scary stuff, but im very keen. just the dirt, hmmm, don't want to tarnish the surroundings too much as well as have the cops snooping around too much. a cop actually stopped me the other day as i was about to go down, luckely, my one admirrer there, the security guard, told the cops that im training, lol, thanks dude, lol.........

@Candyman, the bike park jumps are smaller and easier than most of the spruit ones. The table-top line on the dirt jump track there is a great place to start.
There is however a line of ski jumps on an off-shoot of the spruit. In fact I took a friend there on tuesday. Some of them are kinda big and one gets about 2m height, and 5m distance... but they're all on a descent, so one can literally just roll off them. No gaps to worry about. They're very DH style (the biggest being about the size of the big ski jump in the original Helderkruin line, but without those nasty rocks to land on, and no sharp berm at the bottom). A good place to learn to jump at speed.
The jump pictured though... that line is more slopeslyle... requires some finesse. But when you do a smooth flowing run on that line... the feeling is amazing!
Then you get the Scout hall dirt jumps. Those haven't got huge gaps (biggest being about 4m), and they don't require much speed... but they shoot you high!
As for building... on a DH run you'll want more of a ski jump type setup. A launch with a landing on a descent. Rocks, logs, concrete blocks and even car tyres make for good backfill. Then you just shape the jump with the right kind of dirt. Water it. Compact it. And tadaah! you have a jump that should hold up, and probably get stranger the more you ride it.
