Cross country is literally riding a bicycle across the countryside. It is the least extreme and easiest form of mountain biking to get into. However, when it comes to racing it then involves cycling laps around a short distance off-road course in a set time.

The idea is simple, mounds of dirt are shaped into take-offs that sends the rider into the air, the rider comes in to land on a similar mound of dirt that is shaped into a transition, or landing. Whilst airborne the rider will attempt tricks.

This is a popular form of mountain biking. It entails hurtling down extremely steep elevated slopes in timed runs whilst also adding some flair to the riding. Riders require a fully faced helmet and body armour with the bike having great amounts of travel on the suspension.

A long distance mountain bike event which usually attracts many riders to endure a ride of about 100km either in a point to point, one large loop or many medium sized looped circuits. Some endurance events are held through the night or over an entire 24 hour period.

A form of downhill cycling where riders compete on a track (up to four abreast), similar to that of a BMX course. Riders require a tough bike with an amount of suspension at the front and possibly on the rear (depends on the rider's taste) whilst also wearing some form of protective armour.

A fairly new term for riding. It requires a bicycle with a large amount of suspension (front and rear), similar to the proportion of a downhill bike. Riders go anywhere and do any form of riding in a free unforgiving style in any environment.

For lovers of one gear only. It's the form of going back to where we all started out on a bike, keeping it all very simple. The Singlespeed cult is now become a fashion and is the must have, must do genre of mountain biking.

Street and park riding are both about taking it to the city and being the biggest, baddest kid in the urban playground. Use ledges, walls, rails and stairsets to show everyone who’s boss or tear up some bowls and whip it out big on the hips in the skate park.

Trials is probably the most specialised form of mountain biking. It requires near perfect balance and a series of techniques that are rarely, if ever seen in the other riding disciplines.
