I know I'm going on about this place but to be honest, its the closet to me, that offers downhill entertainment as well as freeride thrills. To most this place doesn't look like much and doesn't seem to hold much, but for me, its like my second home. I kinda grew up in that veld, riding my BMX there when I was still little, with my friends, b4 it was ever build up or even thought of as a DH/Freeride track. Nestled nicely in the south of JHB, just off of the Xavier Rd off ramp, and only a 15min walk from home, once in there, its like being somewhere else, and the silence it offers there, is quite amazing, considering that it is so close to the N12 freeway.
Not the steepest of terrain and very rocky but the paths that are there already, made by the people passing through every so often are very nice and enjoyable, perfect to have fun and to learn on. Safety wise, well, like most places, caution needs to always be taken but from my experience there, the ppl that one meets there, are usually just passers by, walking from Mondeor to Winchester Hills and back again.
Cleanliness, well, I am very surprised. For it being such a public, yet secluded area, there is not much rubbish laying around. Besides the odd beer bottle or plastic bag/cardboard, its actually very clean. Ok ok, I have to admit though, closer to the entry and exit points as well as near the residential section, there is some rubbish laying around, but nothing that can't be sorted out with a rubbish bag.
I'm not 100% sure who the grounds belong to and I really and truly hope they never develop the place further with buildings, etc. I know the council has their fingers in it, as I see they have now a big sign there that says 'No Dumping' and there is a barbed wire fence around the top section. I'm hoping to one of these days, find the owner and ask him/her, if I could perhaps develop the area a little more and perhaps turn it into a cycle park. This is one of the things that are lacking in the South, and big time.
The main track is about 1km long, could be more though. It takes a good 4min to get to the bottom, although, I have a feeling that once I've redesigned the track a little, It'll go faster. My fastest time down so far is about 3min 50. There are about 5 tracks there. Pretty much single track all of them.
The reason why I'm trying to promote this track so much, is because I'm tierd of riding there every weekend on my ace. Its nice, but gets a bit lonely out there and the ideas are missing there on what can be done. Also, I want ppl to have a variety or a change to where they go ride normally.
Also, in the south, I would say, this is the only track available that one can call a DH/Freeride track. There is Rietvlei Farm, but there is no actual DH there. Hills yes, perfect for XC but not for DH. I was also looking at Kliprivierberg, but from what I can tell, its all privately owned and I doubt very much if they will give permission to build there, especially since its under nature conservation, but the thought crosses my mind every time I go ride and I see this big mountain there. The only big problem there, there is no shuttle trails there, so everything is, push push and more push, something I'm getting quite used to now. The Mondeor trail does offer a way to use a shuttle service. There are 2 ways to go, of which both are of more or less the same length but the one road takes you all the way back to the top and the other one stops about 100m before the top. I rate this one the better one, as here one drives more secluded, the other road takes you back onto the main road unfortunately.
To walk back up again is not a train smash and I've sort of created a rest area on the way back up. I need to 1st fix up the bottom end of the track b4 a shuttle can be used. My next aim once the top has been sorted. I'm busy right now fixing up the place, putting in burms, jumps and taking out black jacks and the little rubbish thats there. Some of the tracks there need some hard work and re-design and now this past weekend, I've found a new section that links up to my already existing freeride section. I just need to work out how to improve the entry points.
I know everyone is pretty much stuck on their tracks and trails that they ride almost everyday and I don't mean to sound nasty now, but come on ppl, the south is not as bad as you all think it is. and besides that, I make a plan, even though I'm legally not allowed to drive a car, to go to everyone else's track so how bout returning the fav a little there. But I know what it is, when ppl here, South of JHB, alarms go off, security body guards get called in, armor proof cars roll in and heck, Nelson Mandela doesn't even have as much security as some of the ppl that come through to our side, lol. just kidding. But it would be nice to have more this side of the track. There is loads of potential here, just needs to be scouted out and the ppl here need to be educated about all these weird and wonderful things that we do.
I will from time to time, post updates on the track as well as some pics and vids.
Phenning, I think you the only one that has shown interest so far, lets make a plan and a date and then we can go have some fun. Its one of the easiest tracks in the world to find....
